The Bernedoodle

A cross between a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and a purebred Poodle, making them a goofy, intelligent (yet a tad stubborn), loyal furry companion.

Depending on the Bernedoodle’s generation, the percentage of Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog genetic varies.

The possible genetic combination within this breed results in many differences of coat texture, color, energy level, size and sometimes temperament. (Read below for types of coat texture & color)

Generation

The common generations in Bernedoodles:

F1 Bernedoodles

It is the pairing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. Each puppy inherits 50% of the genetic make up from each parent. (50% Poodle, 50% Bernese Mountain Dog)

F1 Bernedoodles have a wavy to slightly curly coat, and they are usually medium to low shedders.

Their coats require a moderate amount of grooming to prevent tangles and matting, and their structure can be on the bigger side.

F1B Bernedoodles

It is the pairing a F1 Bernedoodle with a Poodle. This combination gives it a higher genetic percentage of the Poodle compared to an F1 Bernedoodle. (25% Bernese Mountain Dog, 75% Poodle)

Most F1b Bernedoodles have a coat that ranges from wavy to very curly, and are low to mininal shedding.

The curlier the coat, the lesser the chances for shedding, but the more grooming is required.

F1B Reverse Bernedoodles

It is the pairing a F1 Bernedoodle with a Bernese Mountain Dog. This combination gives it a higher genetic percentage of the Bernese Mountain Dog compared to an F1 Bernedoodle. (75% Bernese Mountain Dog, 25% Poodle)

Most F1b Reverse Bernedoodles have a coat that ranges from wavy to silky smooth coat, and are low to moderate shedding.

Wavy coat are low to minimal shedding wheareas silky smooth coat sheds moderately.

Are Bernedoodles barkers?

All dogs bark. With very few exceptions. This is how they express themselves - as individual creatures with thoughts and feelings. Honestly speaking, most of us might not like a dog who barks incessantly. However, Bernedoodles aren’t those dogs. They’re truly loveable.

Bernedoodles bark, but are not nuisance barkers. What Bernedoodles lack in bark they certainly make up for with cuddles. Do remember that even though they might not bark frequently, Bernedoodles still want attention or might need something.

Are Bernedoodles easy to train?

They are known to be a tad stubborn. Starting early is key. Due to their curious nature, the Bernedoodle can be a little on the difficult side to teach. Since they’re task-oriented dogs, they often don’t understand immediately why they’re being directed to do something. However, these can be addressed with time, patience and understanding.
